One simply takes a balanced interest in things exactly as they are in their natural states.
Like scientist observing an object.
This is espesially true with unpleasent states of mind like fear, pain.
In order to observe our own fear, we must ACCEPT the fact that we are afraid.
We can not examine our own depression without accepting it FULLY.
The same is true for irritation, and aggitation, frustration and all those onther uncomfortable emotional states.
No shame, no pride nothing personal - what is there is there.
Mindfulness sees all experianses as EQUAL, all feelings as equal.
Mindfulness is non-conseptual awareness. It is not thinking.It is not geting involved with though or concepts. It does not get hang upp on ideas,or opinions or memories. It just looks. It dioes not compare, not label or categorise things.
Mindfulness is direct and immediate experiencing of whatever is happening.
"Sati" - mindfulness is "bare attention".
